Nexstar Broadcasting Group purchased WOI-TV an ABC affiliate, from Capital Communications Company, Inc. on September 16, 2013. WOI-TV was the first in the state of Iowa to start transmitting with frequency modulation (FM) in July of 1949. Less than a year later, on February 21, 1950 WOI-TV signed on the air to become the first television station in central Iowa. In addition to being the first television station in central Iowa, WOI-TV was the first station in the Des Moines market to produce a live local newscast. Also, on the lists of firsts was the origination of a live broadcast of a NCAA athletic event via satellite for the Iowa State vs. San Diego football game on October 10, 1981. WOI-TV continues to have a strong commitment to central Iowa with over 24 hours a week in local news, weather and sports. WOI-TV also provides in depth live coverage of major Iowa events, including: The Principal Golf Classic, RAGBRAI Bike Ride, Iowa State Fair, Iowa Caucus and Iowa Politics. Central Iowans also look to WOI-TV for comprehensive coverage of area sports through the locally produced High School Blitz and Blitz Game Day programs.
