Mary Sandberg Boyle Promoted to Vice President and General Manager of WGN Radio/Chicago

CHICAGO (Sept. 21, 2020) – WGN Radio, the Nexstar Broadcasting, Inc., station serving Chicago and the Midwest since 1924, announced today that Mary Sandberg Boyle has been promoted to Vice President and General Manager.  Ms. Sandberg Boyle is a broadcasting executive with nearly 20 years of media experience, all of it in the Chicago market.

Ms. Sandberg Boyle joined WGN Radio in 2015, where she was instrumental in the development and launch of “The Opening Bell,” a weekday morning business show.  She has held a variety of positions of increasing responsibility at WGN Radio, including Executive Producer, Director of News and Operations, and acting General Manager.

Ms. Sandberg Boyle was named WGN Radio’s General Manager in December 2019, and has led the station through the current COVID-19 pandemic, initiating a series of new policies and procedures designed to improve workflow and keep the staff safe.  She has also overseen a number of programming and personnel changes that have increased WGN Radio’s ratings, which are up 31 percent among adults 25 to 54 according to the latest available ratings.  Most recently, Ms. Sandberg Boyle was responsible for helping launch WGN Radio’s partnership with WGN America’s “NewsNation,” providing radio news reports for the national newscast’s mobile app, newsnationnow.

“Mary has done an outstanding job under less than ideal circumstances,” said Sean Compton, Executive Vice President of WGN America, Antenna TV, WGN Radio and Director of Content Acquisition for Nexstar Media Group.  “She is innovative, thoughtful and determined, and she has forged a great working relationship with the staff.  She is a respected leader in Chicago media and this promotion is well-deserved.  I look forward to WGN Radio’s continued growth under Mary’s guidance.”

“WGN Radio is the gold standard of radio stations in Chicago and the Midwest and I am extremely proud to work alongside its talented and dedicated staff,” said Ms. Sandberg Boyle.  “I am grateful to Nexstar for giving me this opportunity and for allowing me to lead this station into the future.  WGN Radio’s best days are still ahead of us.”

Ms. Sandberg Boyle sits on the Women’s Ambassador board for The First Tee of Greater Chicago and actively volunteers and does outreach with The Ross K. MacNeill Foundation to raise awareness of and develop treatments for pediatric brain cancer.
