Nexstar Broadcasting Group purchased WFRV-TV a CBS affiliate, from Liberty Media Corporation on June 30, 2011. Throughout its history, WFRV-TV Local 5 has always held a strong commitment to the communities it serves. Today, that commitment is stronger than ever, including servicing the viewers with the best possible programming and local news coverage. WFRV has always been a leader in new technology in the Green Bay/Appleton market. Topping the list of many “firsts” are the accomplishments of being the first to broadcast in living color, broadcasting digitally, broadcasting high definition programming, and producing and airing high definition advertising commercials.  WFRV is a market leader in developing important local television and digital content, with over 35 hours of local programming each week, including: Local 5 News, Newsmaker Sunday, Midwest Farm Weekly, Local 5 Live, High School Sports Extra, Sports Extra, Locker Room, Green & Gold Game Day, and Green Bay Nation.  Along with producing weekly local programs, WFRV also broadcasts special programs throughout the year, including the Appleton Flag Day Parade, Fireworks Night Over Northeast Wisconsin, the Veterans Day Special, the Downtown Appleton Christmas Parade, Christmas Eve Mass, and more!

Green Bay / Appleton, WI is in the 67th largest DMA in the United States, with a population of approximately 1,021,060 and 415,890 television households, as reported by Nielsen Media.

Cable penetration is 45.7% and is made up of 11 local cable providers. ADS penetration is at 34.3% and includes Dish TV, DirecTV, and AT&T U-Verse. Historically, the Green Bay economy was built around paper-related industries, which include two of the largest paper manufacturers: Georgia-Pacific and Proctor & Gamble. Green Bay is also home of the Green Bay Packers and the historic Lambeau Field.
