Nexstar Media Group Receives Two National Edward R. Murrow Awards for Outstanding Journalism

IRVING, Texas – Earlier this week, The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) announced the national winners of the Edward R. Murrow Awards with the local news operations of Nexstar Media Group, Inc. (NXST: Nasdaq) garnering awards in the small market television category for Excellence in Social Media and Excellence in Writing. Nexstar’s winning entries will be honored at the RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Awards Gala in New York City on October 14th, 2019.

Since the Company was founded in 1996, Nexstar has established an organization-wide commitment to delivering exceptional locally-produced programming and service to the communities where it operates. In the 2019 National Edward R. Murrow competition, Nexstar’s news operations were distinguished with the following honors for their exceptional local journalism:

  • Excellence in Social Media, Small Market – WROC-TV (Rochester, NY): Rochester comes to life through WROC-TV’s fully integrated social media strategy which is focused on enhancing community engagement by creating a more personal form of communication between anchors, journalists and local audiences on Twitter and on Facebook, while providing exclusive digital video content and photography.
  • Excellence in Writing, Small Market –WEHT-TV (Evansville, IN): A special feature, “The Reverend & The Politician” produced by WEHT-TV revisited the location where Robert F. Kennedy gave what is considered to be one of the greatest public addresses of the modern era following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in 1968. There, Lead Anchor Brad Byrd interviewed retired Senator Richard Lugar who was Mayor of Indianapolis at the time and Steve Bell, a former ABC News correspondent who was covering Bobby Kennedy that night on stage.

In addition to the national honors, Nexstar’s news operations in twenty markets garnered twenty-seven Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards earlier this year of which four awards were given for Overall Excellence.

“I am extraordinarily proud of the work that Nexstar’s local news teams continue to do every day in our markets to tell the local stories that matter to our viewers and their families,” stated Tim Busch, President of Nexstar Broadcasting. “As Nexstar has grown to become one of America’s largest local media companies, we have continued to elevate our commitment to the local communities we serve by delivering more hours of trusted news programming and content that touches the daily lives of our viewers across all screens and devices. The National Edward R. Murrow Awards for writing and social media reflect Nexstar’s focus on excellence in cross platform storytelling and public service.
